Watauga Lake, sitting at the highest elevation of all the TVA man-made lakes is considered to be the most beautiful lake and mountain views in Tennessee. Residing in the Appalachian Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest in the northeast corner of Tennessee, Watauga Lake is surrounded by dense forest and fed by numerous crystal clear mountain rivers and streams. Construction started in 1942 but halted during the war's peak, Watauga Dam was finally closed on the last day of 1948. Lake levels began to rise quickly creating a 6400 acre mountain lake. At an elevation of 1,960 feet above sea level, even at "full pool" during the summer months, the mountain waters remain considerably cooler than other nearby lakes.
The lake extends primarily on an east to west plane and is approximate 25 miles long with over 100 miles of shoreline. Large scale real estate development is extremely limited due to the remote road access, steep shoreline and surrounding lands owned by the TVA and Cherokee National Forest.
Come and enjoy this Appalachian mountain wonder and stay a day, a week or a lifetime.
